How to Make Fruit Leathers
Create your own delicious and healthy fruit leathers with this simple step-by-step guide
Prepare the Fruit
Wash and peel your chosen fruits. Remove any seeds or pits. For best results, use ripe, sweet fruits.
Create Fruit Puree
Blend the fruit in a food processor or blender until smooth. You can add a small amount of water if needed.
Strain (Optional)
For a smoother texture, strain the puree through a fine mesh sieve to remove any remaining pulp or fibers.
Add Sweetener (Optional)
Taste the puree and add honey, maple syrup, or sugar if desired. Start with small amounts and adjust to taste.
Spread the Puree
Pour the puree onto a dehydrator tray or baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread evenly to about 1/8 inch thick.
Dehydrate
Dry at 135°F (57°C) for 6-12 hours in a dehydrator, or in an oven at the lowest setting with door slightly open.
Tips for Success:
- Use very ripe fruits for the sweetest flavor
- Combine different fruits for unique flavor profiles
- Test dryness by touching - it should be tacky but not sticky
- Store in airtight containers in a cool, dry place
- Properly dried fruit leather can last 1-2 months
- For extended shelf life, use a vacuum sealer - vacuum-sealed fruit leather can last 6-12 months when stored properly
